What is Nuno Felting?

Nuno Felting is a technique in which fibers (usually wool) are manipulated through fabric (usually silk), using water, soap and friction. To create each scarf, I lay out a “sandwich” of wool roving (unspun wool), silk, then roving. I usually add in decorative elements, including fibers, art yarns, and felt shapes. After creating the sandwich, everything is wet down with a mixture of olive oil soap and water. The sandwich is rolled by hand or machine for up to 2 hours. This allows the fibers to migrate through the silk. The final stages including rinsing and throwing the scarf in hot soapy water to encourage the fibers to tighten and bond, creating the nuno felt. After a rinse in vinegar and drip drying, the scarf is ready to wear. Because I most often use merino wool, the scarves are soft and not itchy. The airy feel of the nuno felt gives the scarves warmth without being heavy. Art to wear!
